Avelo FAQ

Here are the questions we get asked most about the Avelo system. If yours isn't here, just reach out.

Certification and Who It's For

Do I need a scuba certification before I can dive Avelo?
No. The Avelo Diver course is open to brand-new divers with no prior certification. You will need to complete Avelo-specific training either way, whether you're starting from scratch or adding it to an existing certification.
Can experienced divers use Avelo too?
Yes, and a lot of them notice the biggest difference. Even divers with great trim and buoyancy control end up carrying less weight, less drag, and less task load with Avelo. Certified divers can start with a two-dive Avelo Orientation on top of their existing certification.

Safety

Does Avelo automate my buoyancy for me?
No. You're still the one adding or purging water to control buoyancy. Avelo doesn't take that decision away from you, it just makes the result more stable and predictable than air-based buoyancy, since water doesn't compress or expand with depth.
What happens if the battery dies underwater?
Nothing changes with your buoyancy. The purge valve is fully mechanical and works independently of the battery, so you can finish the dive and complete any safety stops normally.
What if the pump fails?
Same answer. The purge valve doesn't rely on the pump, so your buoyancy stays stable and you can still surface normally.

Buoyancy and Diving Experience

Will I need to wear weight?
Most divers use little to no lead with Avelo, since the water in the Hydrotank does the job of ballast much more precisely.
Is Avelo compatible with Nitrox?
Yes, with Nitrox blends up to 40% oxygen, and the Hydrotank doesn't require special oxygen cleaning for that range.
Can I use Avelo with a drysuit or in cold water?
Yes, the system is rated for all exposure suits and a wide temperature range. You'll just need to show proof of drysuit certification if you're diving one, and you may need a small amount of additional lead.
Does Avelo support sidemount, doubles, or rebreathers?
Not yet. Those technical configurations are still in development on Avelo's end.

Cost, Travel, and Upkeep

How much does the Avelo system cost?
The Jetpack and Hydrotank bundle runs $3,990* USD suggested retail through Avelo Dive Centers. The Jetpack is also available on its own for $3,150*.

*prices subject to change
Can I travel with the Avelo system?
Yes. The Jetpack can be carried on or checked, batteries should go in your carry-on, and an empty Hydrotank checks like a standard scuba cylinder. We can also help arrange rental gear at some destinations if you'd rather not travel with it.
What maintenance does the equipment need?
An annual inspection by a certified Avelo Technician, which we are. Bring it by and we'll take care of it.
