The Avelo System: The Equipment
If you want the actual specs behind the Avelo system instead of just the pitch, here's what's in the box, what it weighs, and what it's rated for.
The Hydrotank
The Hydrotank replaces your tank, BCD, and weight belt in one unit. It stores your breathing gas like a normal cylinder, but it also has a built-in water chamber that handles buoyancy. Add water, get heavier. Purge it, get lighter. Since water doesn't compress with depth, your buoyancy holds steady instead of shifting as you go up or down.
It comes in two sizes:
- 10L Hydrotank: 106 cubic feet at 4,350 psig / 300 bar (roughly equivalent to a steel 100), or 80 cubic feet at 3,300 psig / 228 bar (roughly an aluminum 80 or 12-liter cylinder)
- 8L Hydrotank: 84 cubic feet at 4,350 psig / 300 bar (roughly an aluminum 80), or 65 cubic feet at 3,300 psig / 228 bar (roughly an aluminum 65 or 11-liter cylinder)
The internal liner is 6061 aluminum, wrapped in a carbon fiber and epoxy composite shell. It's built to the ISO 11119-2 standard for Type 3 composite pressure vessels and carries DOT and CE 0036 certification. The bladder inside is a high-grade elastomer, similar to the material used in regulator hoses, and it's designed to self-seal against the tank wall if it ever ruptures, so buoyancy stays stable even in that scenario.
Depth rating is 200 meters. Water use temperature range is 32 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 45 degrees Celsius), and air use temperature range is negative 4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (negative 20 to 60 degrees Celsius). It's rated for Nitrox blends up to 40% oxygen without needing special oxygen cleaning.
Components: high-pressure DIN valve, poppet valve, bladder, composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV), water chamber, fluid port, cage

Avelo Mode
Avelo Mode is the real-time display that shows up on your dive computer during the dive. It's currently available on all air-integrated Shearwater computers except the Petrel, plus the ScubaPro G2C.
Avelo Edge is the post-dive side of things: a dashboard that turns your dive data into plain-language feedback on stability, workload, and efficiency, so you can actually see what improved between dives instead of guessing.

Compatibility, Pricing, & Maintenance
Traditional scuba gear uses air to control buoyancy. You add air to your BCD to float, dump air to sink, and adjust constantly as you change depth, because air compresses and expands as pressure changes. That's why new divers spend their first few dives bobbing up and down instead of looking at the reef.
Even experienced divers are managing this the whole time. It just becomes second nature, so you stop noticing how much attention it actually takes.
Maintenance is an annual inspection by a certified Avelo Technician, which is us. Give us a call or stop by to get a quote or schedule service.

Safety and Quality
With the Avelo System, the diver maintains manual control at all times of their buoyancy at all time. The Avelo Sysem is designed to meet the highest standard in the diving industry, using water-based buoyancy to eliminate the rapid volume changes that causes uncontrolled ascents when using conventional BCD systems.
